eighth street residence
Capitalizing on the site’s narrow geometry and historic context, the simple gable form of this 2,700 sf home stretches the length of the lot to create a surprising variety of spatial experiences. The design is organized by an implied symmetry and spatial efficiency made evident by its structural logic and small footprint. Downstairs, an open-plan, generous front porch and private courtyard dissolve the indoor/outdoor threshold to create a free-flowing series of living spaces. In contrast, private spaces are tucked beneath the traditional roof form upstairs, obscured by operable louvered privacy screens and accented by city views through select apertures. A garage and workshop at the rear of the site complete the building form and serve as a backdrop while activating the courtyard garden between.
