woodlands residence

Situated between two conventional suburban homes in a gated community near Houston, this building’s massing abides by traditional principles of balance and symmetry. Comprised of varying rectangular shapes arranged about two central axes, the plan is formally simple and dictates a clear hierarchy between the open central living area and flanking ancillary bedroom wings. The juxtaposition of heavy masonry walls and floor-to-ceiling glass further reinforce this public/private dichotomy, giving the project a shielded quality from the street and a transparency from within. While the building’s street presence is carefully understated, the dynamic roofscape reinterprets the haphazard amalgamation of disparate and competing forms typically found in suburban roofs by isolating discreet programmatic elements, allowing each to be sculpted independently.
